Poker man aims to bounce right back
Robert Thompson has bounced back from injury and is all set to go for that big, fat CI$1,000 winner’s cheque again in the Cable & Wireless Broadband Poker Run on Sunday 1 May 2005.
Robert won the title last year, but was a big doubt for this year’s event after he took a tumble off his waverunner and damaged a hip.
But he’s up and running again now and is keen to play his cards right on Sunday to help boost his bank balance again.
“I’ve been back in training since December and I’m really going all out to win the event again,” said Robert, who runs RT Construction in his home town of George Town.
“There’s a lot of luck involved with the cards, but I’m hoping it’s going to be more of a race this year than a poker game!”
It’s been quite a comeback year in more ways than one for 35-year-old Robert, for his waverunner also sank off Cayman Brac in July 2004 and he is facing a race against time to get it up and running and back to its best for Sunday.
“The waverunner sank, but we were able to retrieve it and we’re hoping to have the engine totally rebuilt by the weekend,” said Robert, who has been a waverunning nut for the past 12 years.
It’s all part of a great fun day on the beach – and you don’t have to come first to take that winner’s cheque, for it’s the person with the best poker hand that wins the day after picking up cards along the way during the race.
It’s the second event in an exciting week of Carnival on Grand Cayman following on from the song contest at the Mango Tree on Saturday night 30 April from 8pm.
Back to the beach on Sunday, and, starting at noon, everyone is invited to trip along to Royal Palms and watch as jet skis and boats battle it out.
It’s a real bigger, better Carnival style occasion. The beach fete in Cayman is growing and this event will include the much anticipated race events plus some additional ones that will keep families, visitors and fans of all ages entertained for the entire afternoon.
There’s a stack of great prizes on offer including a two tank dive, lunch for two at the Thai Orchid restaurant, a free manicure at Sameena’s Beauty Center, a gift certificate for Noah’s Ark, a meal for two at Bacchus Restaurant and a lady’s or gent’s wash, cut and style at Spa-To-Go. Whether you want to party, put your athletic skills to the test or just spend time with your family, this sun, sea and sand day has something for everyone – adults, teens and kids!
There will be plenty to keep all the spectators busy, whilst at the same time keeping an eye on the contenders battling it out on the open seas.
An exclusive sneak preview is also planned for the Batabano 2005 costumes modelled by some of Cayman’s prettiest ladies!
It will all be set to the Caribbean’s 2005 hottest soca music, spun by the Island’s best DJs!
Refreshments, food and lots of activities for the kids – including bouncy castles, games and prizes – will all be provided making it a can’t miss event!
So riders “rev your engines” and spectators prepare for non-stop excitement.
It promises to be a real wet and wild afternoon as everyone enjoys Carnival Cayman Style!
